Dr Lees is a clinical lecturer in renal medicine based at the University of Glasgow and funded by the Scottish government. She completed a PhD in 2020 exploring the role of vitamin K in vascular health and disease and ran a trial of vitamin K supplementation in kidney transplant recipients (ViKTORIES). Her current interest is in the long-term risks in people with CKD, particularly cardiovascular disease and cancer. She fell into some cystatin C work by accident and she will be talking about this today.

Objectives:

• Glomerular filtration rate: what is abnormal?
• Estimated GFR by creatinine vs. cystatin C (vs. both)
• What the guidelines say
• Classification of CKD
• Assessment of long-term risk
• Age-adapted CKD thresholds
• Pros and cons
• Parallels of risk-based definition in other chronic diseases
